Art Valet: Painting classes resume at Casa Ramirez | Arts

Casa Ramirez FOLKART, 241 W. 19th St., offers an in-person painting class with Houston artist Lizbeth Ortiz from 1-3 p.m. Sunday.

Ortiz will lead the hands-on class painting an embroidered floral heart with oil pastels and acrylics on a 12-by-16-inch black canvas. No experience or equipment is required for this all-inclusive course.

Course fees are $45 for one person or $40 per person for a group of two or more. All materials are provided.

Casa Ramirez FOLKART has been a staple on popular West 19th Street for many years. The store has been rooted in the artistic community and Latino cultural traditions, teachings and courses since its inception.

The shop/gallery offers a wide selection of folk art, Mexican dresses, works by local artists, books on culture and cuisine and bilingual children’s books, greeting cards and decorations.

“Classes have been reduced during the pandemic, but now that restrictions are easing, it’s the perfect time to schedule this class with a very popular artist,” store owner Chrissie Dickerson Ramirez said of the resumption of classes. .

Let’s talk about your teacher. In addition to being a staple artist at Casa Ramirez, Ortiz is herself a well-known award-winning artist. Born in Mexico City between two cemeteries, raised in Houston (graduated from HSPVA) and grown into adulthood in New York, this may have influenced her work. Just kidding, I know.

Ortiz was one of the original organizers of the first Houston Frida Festival in 2005. She was honored as an official artist of the Latin Grammy, celebrated in Houston in 2008. Ortiz also received second place in the national Bohemia Beer competition, “The Kahlo Challenge,” in 2011.

An artistic background is not necessary for Sunday classes, but reservations are. Reserve a space by calling 713-880-2420. Prepayment of course fees is required before Saturday.
