Emirates Airline Festival of Literature announces 2022 author list


The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature has announced its 2022 lineup, the selection paying homage to the source literature behind some of today’s most compelling films and series.

Bridgerton author Julia Quinn and Chernobyl 1986 Author Serhii Plokhy, both of whom have had their respective works turned into hit Netflix projects, will appear at the festival.

Sara Gay Forden, author of Gucci House, which has been adapted into an upcoming film starring Lady Gaga and Al Pacino, has also been confirmed.

Mona Shammari, historical drama writer No music in Al Ahmadi, Mohammed Saeed Harib, creator of Freej, and Demon slayer host Ken Arto is also expected to appear at the festival.

The event will take place from February 3 to 12.

The full list of writers was revealed at an event at the Expo 2020 Dubai site on Wednesday, featuring a performance by Emirati singer Arqam.

The organizers reiterated the theme of the festival – Here Comes the Sun – which for the first time will be held at Habtoor City hotels along the canal.

Other big names in the program include The Entrepreneur and To crush! author Gary Vaynerchuck; television chief and Great british pastry shop Star Nadiya Hussein; actor and Gangsta Granny writer David Walliams; Iman Mersal, winner of the Sheikh Zayed Book Prize 2021; Jalal Barjas, winner of the International Prize for Arab Fiction 2021; and Sleepy head novelist Mark Billingham.

Baghdad clock author Shahad Al Rawi, YouTuber Ahmed El Ghandour, aka Al Da7ee7, and Omar Saif Ghobash, who will launch his first novel after his acclaimed non-fiction work in 2017 Letters to a Young Muslim, will also appear.

While most of the characters will appear in person at the festival, a few are expected to participate virtually, including hit thriller writer David Baldacci.

The festival will open with a day dedicated to the Emirates, showcasing a solid lineup of Emirati authors of all genres. Organized in collaboration with Dubai Culture, it will also offer sessions ranging from short story readings and poetry to panel discussions on topics ranging from screenwriting to women in education and collector’s science.

A panel of esteemed experts will discuss the stigma of being in the arts, while another panel will bring together three impressive Emirati women on unconventional career paths, including aviator Fatima Al Mansoori. Meanwhile, life coach Hala Kazim will share her thoughts on positivity, wellness and mental health, offering practical steps towards acceptance.
