Penguin Random House India has announced the acquisition of two new book titles by the late legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray.
These unreleased tracks by the extraordinary artist, edited by his son Sandip Ray, will be released under the aegis of “The Penguin Ray Library” from 2023.
The first title, “Feluda in the Golden Fortress”, is an English translation of Ray’s cult detective story called “Sonar Kella”.
First published in 1971 in Bengali, the book was also adapted for cinema in 1974 and starred late film icon Soumitra Chatterjee as Ray’s famous “private investigator” Feluda.
Ray not only directed but also wrote the script for the film and composed the music.
Equipped with line drawings and illustrations from Ray’s sketchbook, Feluda’s Ultimate Book is set for release in 2023.
“Being Feluda’s first film, Sonar Kella is both my favorite and Baba’s. The plot, the places and the characters are spectacular. This forthcoming book on “Sonar Kella” will contain never before seen archival material, including writings, illustrations and photographs from this iconic film. I’m sure it will be a treat for all Ray enthusiasts around the world, ”said Sandip Ray, who is also member secretary of the Satyajit Ray Society.
The second title, an exceptional collection of essays and interviews by the maestro, selected and edited by Sandip Ray, opens a rare window on the life, philosophy and works of Satyajit Ray.
The untitled book will be released in 2024.
According to the editors, Ray’s “ultimate package” of never-before-seen sketches, illustrations and additional writing is “great news” for Ray enthusiasts.
“‘Sonar Kella’ is one of Ray’s most popular stories, which is loved by all. This translation by Satyajit Ray is going to be a milestone event for all of us… Plus, the book of essays and interviews goes be a treasure. We are delighted and honored to publish these Penguin books, “said Premanka Goswami, editor-in-chief of PRHI.
Launched in 2019, The Penguin Ray Library is a series of unpublished works curated by Ray, published by Penguin in association with The Satyajit Ray Society.
Since launch, Penguin has released one new title (“3 Rays”), redesigned eight previously released titles, and in addition to these new acquisitions, four new titles are in the works, all in the Penguin Ray Library.
