On February 15, Thom Browne unveiled a preview of the Fall/Winter 2022 collection. A portfolio full of images shows the brand’s signature navy and gray plaid tartan splashed across all items. First shown on the catwalk at New York Fashion Week in 2006, this tartan has been an integral part of Browne’s overall aesthetic.

Listed in the Tartan Registry of Scotland, Browne’s tartan was originally made from wool twill. The wool was produced by Lochcarron of Scotland, a tartan house that dates back to the 1800s. Now Browne has expanded his tartan to include fabrics such as cashmere, British wool tweeds, French ribbon tweeds and twills of Japanese school uniforms.

For his latest collection, Browne imagines the family tartan through his creation of clothing for women, men and children. The image portfolio shows the gray and navy tartan used as wallpaper, upholstery, clothing and even a stuffed dog. Parents wear tartan skirts, shirts, socks and even shoes. The child sports a similar look, wearing a blazer, shirt, shorts and what appear to be his father’s dress shoes. The look plays into the twisted American prep look the brand has become known for.

The entire collection plays with different versions of the constructed canvas construction and the soft unconstructed construction. Browne shows the expansion of tartan textiles using cashmere for socks, canvas for shoes and a variety of other materials for the outerwear collection. It shows “Browne’s continued interest in working with traditional fabrications to create new, timeless silhouettes and collections.”

As part of the collection’s debut, Browne hosted a dinner at New York Fashion Week to show off the pieces. With Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud and others in attendance, the group showed off the tartan pieces at the tartan-themed dinner.

This fresh take on heritage fabrics is just the start of the new collection. The brand will explore heritage fabrics in a new light at the show in New York in April.
