Warner Bros. shows footage at CinemaCon – Deadline

Baz Luhrrmann came to CinemaCon and brought the goods on his latest feature Elvis, which he says “isn’t so much of a biopic”.

The manager said his Elvis covers three versions of the King of Rock: as a rebel, Hollywood star and his Vegas twilight; the singer being a mirror of America through different phases. Tom Hanks’ Colonel Tom Parker also looms large in Elvis’ life.

Similar to the director’s soundtrack Gatsby the magnificent who fused jazz with JZ’s hiphop sensibility, there’s a similar musical motif in Elvis.

In the footage we saw tonight, a hip hop version of “Nothing But a Hundog” played.

The aorta of the footage shows Austin Butler’s Elvis being escorted by the cops to his concert. The cops tell him not to move a finger.

“There’s a lot of people saying a lot of things…you gotta listen to yourself,” Elvis said at the teenage stage.

“I’m going to show you what the real Elvis looks like tonight,” the king said before singing “Heartbreak Hotel.”

Parker says, “At that time, Elvis the man was sacrificed and Elvis the God was born!”

Ahead of the clip’s launch, Luhrmann opened up about growing up in a small country town where her father took over acting. “That movie in our house…you had to make it a hit,” Luhrmann said, speaking directly to theater owners in the movie.

“If it means a person walks into a theater, I’m there with you,” the director promised the room to loud applause.

The film directed by Baz Luhrmann will be released in theaters on June 24.

“You know, I haven’t finished it yet,” Luhrmann confessed, “If it sounds a bit like a superhero movie, it is. Elvis is kind of the original superhero. He’s going up so high, then finds his kryptonite and falls so low, then a beautiful and mighty tragedy ensues.

“Man can’t live off Batman alone, we have to bring all audiences to the theater,” the director said.

Butler, who organically has the singer’s cadence, also made an appearance on stage. “The main thing, I sought to find his humanity,” the actor said of his process, “He’s one of those individuals who achieved iconic status, he seems superhuman.”
