Word of South Hosts Literature and Music Weekend at Cascades Park in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Cascades Park was inundated with people attending Friday’s live concert to kick off The Word of South festival.

Over the next two days, community members will have the opportunity to learn how literature and music share a bond.

Hundreds of people listened to the first live performance to launch The Word of South festival.

Friday’s show started at 7 p.m. at the Parc des Cascades amphitheater.

Musicians and authors performing on the stages of the park; giving the community a chance to connect with them is the goal of this festival.

Musicians playing live music and authors reading their books is the perfect event for Tallahassee.

“We are an innovative and avant-garde city. We are open to artistic and cultural events and we have a strong literary and musical community,” said Sara Marchassault.

Marchessault, director of the Word of South Festival, said she has watched the festival grow over seven years and being able to connect music and literature is a connection she wants everyone to experience.

She said that this year the festival has a unique component aimed at children.

“We’re hosting a literacy pathway, a new idea that we’re excited to try where we’re planning interactive stations for kids and families,” Marchessault said.

She said children who participate will have the opportunity to go home with a free book donated by Early Learning Coalition.

Word of South is a free weekend event with multiple stages for performances and workshops set up around Cascades Park.

“To be able to spend the weekend here and see everyone enjoying this festival which is for Tallahassee; very very special and I think it draws a lot of regular attendees,” said Elizabeth Anderson.

A place for lovers of the art of communication.

“They’re fabricating something. They’re using words, their experiences and their emotions to try to get something out of the audience,” Anderson said.

Words that allow strangers to connect with music in the best way.

The Mot du Sud festival is Saturday April 9th and Sunday April 10th.
